This is a free crochet pattern for Rheema Popcorn Beanie, for a 6-12 months old baby, for kids and adult, with photo tutorial in each step. This beanie uses the hdc camel stitch.

This beanie is inspired by the Jenny Hat of Nany Madel blog

In this free pattern, you have to learn how to crochet camel stitch. 

Lately I have been seeing a lot of beanies over the net about camel stitch, so here is a version of mine.

All hdc in this pattern are using the camel stitch technique, so when you see a hdc (camel) you have to insert your hook at the back bump of the specified st.

Materials Needed

Kids size

Hook: 5.00MM [US H-8]

Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver in hot pink, approx 200 yds

6-12 months old size

Hook: 4.00MM [US G-6]

Yarn: Red Heart Super Baby TLC, Powder Yellow, approx 200 yds

Adult size

Hook: 5.50MM [US I-9]

Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver


Terms Used:

All terms are in USA terminology

Ch: Chain,  Sc: Single Crochet,  Dc: Double Crochet, Pc: Popcorn,  Hdc: Half Double Crochet, Bpdc: Back Post Double Crochet,  Fpdc: Front Post Double Crochet,  Sl st: Slip Stitch, Sk: Skip


Stitch Guide:

Popcorn (pop or pc): Work 5 double crochet (dc) stitches in the same stitch; drop the loop from your hook; insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first double crochet of the group; grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch. Popcorn made.

Hdc Camel St: Yarn over hook once, insert hook in the back horizontal bump of next st (or in the specified st), Yarn over, draw the yarn through the chain (3 loops on hook), Yarn over, draw through 3 loops on hook: half double crochet made.

Back post double crochet (bpdc): Yarn over, insert hook from back to front to back around post of specified st and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook, yarn over and draw through remaining 2 loops on hook. For photo tutorial please click here.

Gauge:

(Baby size) 2 inches square = 8 Sts x 4 Rows of DC


Rheema Popcorn Beanie Instructions:

Round 1: Magic crochet, Ch 1, 12 hdc in magic ring, end w/ sl st in 1st hdc to join.

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 hdc camel st in the same st and in each of next st around, end w/ sl st in 1st hdc to join. [24 hdc camel st]

Round 3: Ch 1, 2 hdc camel st in the same st, hdc camel st in next st, * 2 hdc camel st in the same st, hdc camel st in next st, rep * around, end w/ sl st in 1st hdc to join. [36 hdc camel st]

Round 4: Ch 1, hdc camel st in the same st, 2 hdc camel st in the same st, *(hdc camel st in next st) twice, 2 hdc camel st in the same st, rep * around, hdc camel  st in last st, end w/ sl st in 1st hdc to join. [48 hdc camel st]

Round 5: Ch 1, 2 hdc camel st in the same st, (hdc camel st in next st) 3 times, *2 hdc camel  st in the same st, (hdc camel st in next st) 3 times, rep * around, end w/ sl st in 1st hdc to join. [60 hdc camel st]

Round 6: Ch 1, hdc camel st in the same st, 2 hdc camel st in the same st, *(hdc camel st in next st) 4 times, 2 hdc camel st in the same st, rep * around, hdc camel st in each of rem st, end w/ sl st in 1st hdc to join. [72 hdc camel st]     

Round 7: Ch 1, hdc camel st in the same st and in each of next st around, end w/ sl st in 1st hdc to join.

Round 8: Ch 4 (consider ch 3 as 1st dc and ch 1 sp), sk next st, pop in next st, ch 1, sk next st, *dc in next st, ch 1, sk next st, pop in next st, ch 1, sk next st, rep * around, end w/ sl st in 1st dc to join. [18 pop]


Round 9: Ch 1, hdc in the same st and in each st around.


Round 10-11: Rep round 7

Round 12-15: Rep round 8-11

Round 16: Rep Round 8


Round 17: Rep Round 9

Round 18: Rep Round 7

For adult size only, repeat round 7 once more


Round 19: Ch 3, fpdc in next st, (bpdc in next st, fpdc in next st) around, end w/ sl st in 1st dc to join.


Round 20: Ch 3, fpdc in next fpdc, (bpdc in next bpdc, fpdc in next fpdc) around, end w/ sl st in 1st dc to join.
