Free crochet pattern: Beginners Baby Beanie

This is a free and easy crochet pattern for Beginners Baby Beanie, an excellent gift for a newborn baby, with photo tutorial in each step.

This Beginners Baby Beanie is worked in round from top (crown) to down (ear).

Pattern is made out of dc and sc, an excellent pattern for beginners.

Finished beanie measurement is –

Height (crown to ear) 4.45”  x  Width (diameter) 6” , can fit to a newborn baby. 

This beanie can be a unisex beanie, depending on the color you choose, but what better way to announce "It's a Girl" with a crochet flower attachment.


This Beginners Baby Beanie can be partnered with Irish Baby Booties. 

Approximately in 1 ball of thread you can make 2 pairs of booties.

Materials Needed:

Hook: Stainless Hook 4 / 2.00 MM

Thread: Cannon 100% Mercerized Cotton, 8 Crochet thread, Shade No: SC027, 175 meters


Terms Used:

All terms are in USA terminology

Ch: Chain,  Sc: Single Crochet,  Dc: Double Crochet


Beginners Baby Beanie Instructions:

Round 1: Ch 4 (consider ch 3 as 1st dc here and throughout the pattern), 11 dc in 4th ch from hook, sl st in 1st dc to join. [12 dc]

Round 2: Ch 3, dc in the same st, 2 dc in each of next dc around, sl st in 1st dc to join. [24 dc]

Round 3: Ch 3, dc in the same st, dc in next st, *2 dc in next st, dc in next st, rep * around, sl st in 1st dc to join. [36 dc]

Round 4: Ch 3, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, *(dc in next st) twice, 2 dc in next st, rep * around, sl st in 1st dc to join. [48 dc]

Round 5: Ch 3, 2 dc in next st, *(dc in next st) 3 times, 2 dc in next st, rep * around, (dc in next st) twice, sl st in 1st dc to join. [60 dc]

Round 6: Ch 3, dc in the same st, (dc in next st) 4 times, *2 dc in next st, (dc in next st) 4 times, rep * around, sl st in 1st dc to join. [72 dc]

Round 7: Ch 3, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, *(dc in next st) 5 times, 2 dc in next dc, rep * around, (dc in next st) 3 times, sl st in 1st dc to join. [84 dc]

Note: After round 7, this is what we call the crown of the beanie. The crown should measure 3.5"-4.0"  in diameter. Continue to round 8



Round 8: Ch 3, dc in each of next st around, sl st in 1st dc to join.

Round 9: Ch 3, 2 dc in the same st, sk next 2 dc, (3 dc in next dc, sk next 2 dc) around, sl st in 1st dc to join.


Round 10: Sl st in next 2 dc and in next space, ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp, sk next 3 dc, (3 dc in next space, sk next 3 dc) around, sl st in 1st dc to join.


Round 11-22: Rep round 10.


Round 23: Ch 1, sc in the same st and in each sts around, sl st in 1st sc to join.

Fasten Off.
